Shanklin Beach is a ~1-2 mile stretch of sandy beach. Backed by a strip of sea-themed resturants, cafes crazy golf and amusements, embayed by a sheer cliff of mudstone/sandstone/fossil mix. This walk is a great short stroll along the beach, especially at low tide when the freshly flat beach below the cliff is exposed with a receding tide. The other end of the beach is a favourite tourist spot, so to avoid the deck chairs and towels on a summer day, this beach offers a great escape and space to explore!
At especially low tides it's possible to walk towards Luccombe Bay round the cliffs ledge, behind which lives a perculiar landscape of rocky platforms. It's a complete transition of beach and views from what is on offer along the main stretch, so it's a great experience to gain when you can time your tides right (but ensure you have enough time with the tides to get back round or you can get cut off).
The sea here is also great for a swim - a few stones in places but this is outweighed by the clear turwquiose waters on offer. Further up the cliff end of the beach you are also likely to see a wealth of creatures going about their business in what looks like a grass-like habitat of seaweed. Usually, unless weather conditions are especially unfavourable, the sea is a flat glass beauty, especially appreciable around sunrise and sunset.
This beach can be reached either by driving down and parking at the car park or road parking, a 10 minute walk from the train station (and bus stop), or a walk down from the cliff path which runs adjacent to the seafront. Just past the fishermans resturant, another section of cliff path can also be reached by some challenging steps which lead you through a cut-out of the chine and its top entrance, then out to Shanklin Old Village - a definite visit if ever in Shanklin.
So if you're looking for a short seaside stroll, with hidden cliff wonders, ample choice of local resturants, backed by cliff path views and quaint old shops and pubs - Shanklin Beach makes for a great walk!
